The Anton Stadler Basset Clarinet Composition Competition 2012/2013
It was Anton Stadler's idea to extend the lower range of his clarinets. Together with the instrument maker Theodor Lotz, he brought to life an instrument we now know as the Basset Clarinet. It is a clarinet in A with an extended lower range to low C similar to the basset horn. This lower range gives the clarinet a warmth and depth throughout the instrument's range.
It is an important instrument, not the least because it was utilised by Mozart, writing his Concerto in A major K.V.622 and Quintet K.V.581 for Basset Clarinet in A.
Following the great success of the 2010 competition we are happy to announce the second composition competition, in memory of Anton Stadler.
The successful composers will have their works published by Edition Lyrique and recorded by Dr. Marc B. Naylor.
We are looking for new works in the following catagories:
Section One: Music for Unaccompanied Basset Clarinet
Section Two: Music for Basset Clarinet & Piano
Section Three: Concerto for Basset Clarinet
Section Four: Variations for Basset Clarinet & Piano
Section Five: Quintet for Basset Clarinet & String Quartet.
In all the sections we are looking for TONAL and MELODIC compositions which use the Basset Clarinet in a traditional way. The works should also be playable on a period basset clarinet. The composers will not be limited as to the length of their works.
Works submitted must not have been previously performed, recorded or published.
All works must be accompanied by a CD recording which may be of a computer realisation or live non public performance.
All works must include the basset register of the clarinet.
